Excellent, enlightening piece. Sometimes, we don’t need something dumbed-down, we just need it broken down.

Because you mentioned the picture: I don’t know if you’re familiar with the book Lest We Forget – The Passage From Africa Into the Twenty-First Century by Velma Maia Thomas. It contains all kinds of removable memorabilia, like copies of an emancipation deed and slave receipt. The first time I held one of these items, when I fully grasped what I was holding, I felt sickened and instinctively flung it out of hands. The level of dehumanization hit me in a stronger, clearer way. Your piece brought that book and that experience back to me.
