"The pursuit of likes may drive individuals to prioritize quantity over quality, leaving relationships superficial and transactional." Is any other type of relationship even possible on social media? These platforms limit us to a like and a brief comment, even on serious, sensitive and complex issues that really warrant a lengthier, more comprehensive discussion back and forth — preferably face-to-face, so we can see how someone is being affected by our words and we an provide clarification, elaboration, or support in real time where needed.
Love how this article came at things from so many angles and raised so many important issues for consideration.
Great article Brian! I admit, I'm as lured by likes and the right clickbait as anyone. It takes real effort not to get lost in the number of responses we get to our posts and use that to measure our success. I can especially see how powerful this dopamine rush has been on our young, and how it has absorbed them into a world of comparison. Such a defeating way to gauge ourselves and our efforts. But I do see a resurgence in many now seeking authenticity. Not just from themselves, but from others. Perhaps the fabricated plastic personas, and like-needing feelings eventually get tiresome and the need for honest human engagement reasserts itself. We can only hope.
