One of the things I appreciated most about my late partner was how experiencing his world expanded my world; and this involved his dogs, which he loved dearly. Colliding with that backstory, this piece churned up so many emotions and brought back so many memories. I can even see/hear my partner reacting with enthusiasm to the stunning dog in the photo, as clear as if he were right here. Funny how the past gets pulled into the present in unexpected ways.

So true Neil. The companionship of a dog is unmatched, and as you say, they teach us as much as we teach them. I have a wonderful framed speech titled "A Tribute to the Dog" that my great-grandfather gave to my grandfather in 1927. I'll email it to you. Thank you for this.

Like this article, my comment is going to be biased. My two little Shih Tzus have taught me so much. I marvel daily about their ability to learn, their natural inquisitiveness, the unbounded joy they have in their relationship with us. As I write this, Charlie is sitting on my feet and sleeping.
