The Silent Table
By Susan Knight | What comes to mind when you envision a meal shared together at the kitchen table?

This short little vignette offers a non-traditional take on the traditional kitchen table scene.
Silence. They sit at the table in silence.
Together, but separate. Inches away from one another, close enough to touch, yet miles apart, occupying different worlds.
Sitting at the same table day after day, without ever really knowing one another. Sharing a meal, but incapable of sharing thoughts, hopes, and dreams.
Pass the salt and pass each other over. Clearly positioned within the line of sight, but unseen.
Bodies nourished while souls remain starved, hungering for something yet to materialize.
Lift the fork. Take the last bite. Swallow. Meal over. Knife and fork positioned neatly on the plate. Push away from the table, dragging the chair across the floor. Stand up.
“Excuse me.” The silence is finally broken.
