The Pond
A poem of love and possibilities in a world where both seem lacking. This poem is from the book "A Sliver of a Chance" by Brian Sankarsingh - reproduced with permission
A poetry group posted a challenge to write a poem about a picture of a faceless couple staring out onto a pond reflecting the rays of the setting sun. No hints or explanations were given, and the story of the picture was left to each individual poet.
Thanks to my friend, Kris, who read the poem and drew the image above.
Sunshine glimmers across the pond Time stands still when they’re hand in hand Looking to a future bright Staring into the shimmering light Slowly turning to see his face She remembers his loving embrace Within her eyes his life’s aglow With this woman, he wants to grow old In this moment, at this pristine lake With all the promises left to make All that matters is now right here The future is now for them to share

Simple and beautiful, and that image (complete with the cedar waxwings that come out in the evening) fits perfectly.
