“I miss feeling alive,” he says, his tone calm, detached. His eyes are steady, his face blank.
As Irene takes in his composed demeanour, she realizes this isn’t some sudden revelation. Her stomach churns; she feels lightheaded. She leans against the wall to steady herself.
“You miss feeling alive?” The words come out of her mouth tentatively. To her own ears, her voice sounds thin and weak.
“You heard me,” he replies, his tone shifting from calm to annoyed.
Irene examines his face. The eyes remain steady for a few moments, then flicker; he looks away. She recognizes his harsh tone for what it really is: shame. He dreads what is coming next as much as she does. The churning in her stomach intensifies.
